When your profile says too much …

Posted on 23 July 2008

In another article I’d like to present you some ideas about the importance of NOT letting your profile blank, but right now it would be a good idea to try and see why sometimes it’s a good idea to not give too much information.

We can start with an example. Few weeks ago I started playing on one of the .com servers. I was still in the beginner protection (7 days, since the server started earlier). My main concern was to get some clubswingers as soon as possible to start raiding. I like to play as a teuton and I steal as much as possible.

While scouring the area for some villages to attack, my eyes fell on some guys profile. Saying how advanced he is, how much he’s raiding other people and how big his army is. It was very clear to me at that moment that the guy was gonna hit my village the second I got out of the server protection. So I created some more soldiers to be able to raid and then focused on the crannies since it was expected that I’d have visitors.

The fact he warned me with his profile, helped me a lot. I knew clearly what he was up to and he didn’t stand a chance into getting resources. As you can imagine he raided for 4-5 days and got 0 resources all the time. After that he stopped. If it wasn’t for that extensive profile information, maybe I would have been careless with the crannies and his attacks would have been successful.

During his and others attacks (my population was still small and they were as aggressive as I am) I thought maybe it would be “cool” to let a note in my profile that I have crannies and they wouldn’t get anything. But then I thought: WHY? Let them lose troop time to raid a village that won’t give them 1 resource at least. The time they lose sending 60-100 clubbies in my village is the time they won’t raid others, it’s the time I spend successfully raiding and then getting bigger than them.

Letting people know very few things is a good idea (kinda saves you from the attacks some start because they think you’re just a “noob”), but try to not divulge too much. Why help your enemies with such important information? If they know less, they tend to make more mistakes and you can thus develop better.

Web designer and Travian player. Started playing Travian on the FIRST speed server (some years ago) as a total beginner. Afterwards I played on some more, trying desperately to not give Travian too much time (I kinda failed in this, it's addictive) :) Right now I am a top 10 player on the Travian.com #3 server in a top alliance.

Also those people who tell you where in the world they are and how old they are - may be hurting themselves.

These two pieces of information can help tell you when they are likely to be asleep and you can raid or not raid as you see fit. Also their age may tell you if they work or a school aged player - raid when they are away from the computer - so they can’t mount a defense easily.

Hello Rusell and welcome to TT :)

Yeah, I totally agree, knowing such things can really give you some more information about a player …

hello (sau salut, cum vrei s-o iei). I know that the profile is very important , but is a little hard to not put things about your travian account on your profile … i found a travian player that wrote in his profile “I have 100 catapults” , but i spied him and he hasn’t any troops … you know , i attacked him and farmed him :D

He he .. that was tough for him :D

I don’t put unreal stuff into the profile, but not give too much info either ;)

After someone has raided me I put some info about their troops, village position, and last attack time in my profile. I hope someone find it useful who want to wipe their army out.

You can get information from population too. If it grows 5 means that the player finished the stables for example.

Or that the player has 2-3 villages with more constructions at the same time ;)

The idea of putting the info on the profile is pretty interesting, but the problem is that most of the time people who raid you also have other “teams” on the road. A big player has many hundreds of soldiers and they make tens of “rides” at the same time. You are advertising a small portion of them, but the truth is he/she might have hundreds more … anyway .. this is indeed new to me too .. let me know how it’s all working out for you ;)

That my friend is exactly why you send raids of max 5 troops. It’s just bad time-management sending “60-100″ troops on a raid, especially if you know that they spend down/ cranny up.

This shows that your little problem is a n00b teuton because it’s always better to get a whole bunch of resources from many villages, rather than large, lump sums.

PS> If you want to take him out, send a message to him and try to stay online until the message is “read”, do it a couple of times and get the average time.

This should tell you when he logs in, send some cavalry about 10-15 minutes before he usually reads his messages and BAM, his little force of 100 clubbies= wiped out. Or just scout to see if he leaves his army in the village overnight.

Some good tips there teutonic plague ;)

I send more soldiers when I know the “farm” has many resources and is very very close to me. Otherwise the small groups seems to have worked pretty nicely too. I got more resources in more raids with smaller troops than just sending tens of soldiers over fewer villages.
